Australia’s flu season is bad this year
This year’s flu season in Australia is in the news. In June 2019 so far, 31,220 people were diagnosed with the flu according to figures from the Australian government. In June 2018, there were only 1,984. June numbers haven’t been this high since sometime before 2001. And this outbreak on the other side of the world could be bad news for Canada as we head into our winter, as our flu season can resemble the Australian flu season. Are there natural methods we can use to help our body prepare for the flu season?
Lifestyle choices that help our immune system
The good news is that our lifestyle choices can help us stay healthy during flu season. First and foremost, avoid processed foods, especially refined sugar. The effect of sugar on our body’s immune system is well documented. White blood cells are our body’s first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. Sugar consumption weakens our immune system by reducing how well white blood cells perform.
There are healthy foods that can help you build natural resistance during the flu season. Good food makes our gut healthy, helping regulate our immune system. Vegetables are full of fiber and packed with anti-oxidants. Zinc deficiency is relevant to H1N1 influenza because it decreases cell-mediated immunity. Zinc is known to “starve” bacteria, helping our immune system fight off flu and cold. For your information, the following are foods high in zinc.
Exercise is known to boost our immune system. A University of California-San Diego of Medicine study found that as little as 20 minutes of exercise can have anti-inflammatory effects that boost your immune system. Sleep also helps enhance our immunity. Children and the elderly, identified as high-risk populations and first in line for the flu vaccine, are often sleep-deprived. Sleep deprivation is bad for our immune function. Healthy sleep enhances speed up recovery from H1N1 (the Swine Flu virus).
The Spanish Flu of 1918
This year’s flu is predominated by the Swine Flu virus. This was the virus associated with the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-9 that devastated the world. It is estimated that between 20 million and 100 million died during the Spanish flu pandemic. That’s more than the total number of fatalities from WW l & WWII combined! The Spanish flu was caused by H1N1.
Homeopathic Medicine during the Spanish Flu Pandemic
A lot of people are skeptical that homeopathy can help. They argue that there is nothing in it, that it’s merely placebo. They ignore the 1986 study that appeared in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet proving that there is more to homeopathy than placebo.
Notwithstanding this skepticism, Homeopathy proved remarkably successful during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. Those treated by homeopathic physicians had a mortality rate of just 1.05 percent. In contrast, the mortality rate of people treated with traditional medicine and drugs was 30 percent!
Homeopathic medicines are highly attenuated, all-natural substances. They work when tailored to the individual, taking into consideration how the flu affects you physically and mentally. To find out more about a few of my favorite homeopathic flu medicines, click here.
